WHO'S WALKING WHO?

Who's walking who? Have you heard that question when out walking your dog(s), smiled at the "joke" between clenched teeth, and walked on frustrated and discouraged because you've worked for hours on this skill with your dog but nothing seems to stick? Dogs love to be outside and explore the world so it's natural for them to want to pull ahead. They are not pulling to be dominant or alpha dog they are just excited to follow all the new sights & scents. So what's the secret to teaching loose leash walking? Here is a summary of some key points:

+ Start early - teach a puppy a solid "watch me" and to walk beside you in the house with no leash.
+ Use a harness with a front attachment. If your dog pulls with this type of harness it actually turns them towards you.
+ Use the Stop & Be Still Technique. Basically if the dog pulls, you stop & wait until the dog looks back & takes a step towards you. Then you move forward. Hopefully the dog learns quickly they don't get to go forward unless the leash is loose. OR
+ The Reverse Direction Technique. If the dog pulls, you call them and walk in the opposite direction. Again, the dog only gets to go forward if the leash is loose.
+ Regardless of which technique you use - you must be consistent. You can't allow them to pull at times and not at other times.
+ Your demeanor is key. Stay relaxed. If you tense up when another dog or person is approaching that tension runs right down the leash and the dog senses it and reacts accordingly.

Taking your dog for a walk should be an enjoyable activity for both of you. It is mentally stimulating for the dog, some good exercise for you, and a great way to strengthen the bond between you.
